2003 Medical Technology Industry Survey
The State of the Medical Technology Industry Today Key Findings from AdvaMed's 2003 Medical Technology Industry Survey
AdvaMed surveyed its members on the state of the devices and diagnostics industry. Questionnaires were returned by 81 companies, representing a cross section of the industry. The survey results paint a picture of a highly competitive industry that is increasing its focus on developing next-generation and breakthrough technologies. The findings also paint a picture of an industry that is encountering significant FDA regulatory hurdles in getting these advances approved as well as intense pressure to assure that their technologies are cost saving or cost effective. The survey documents that these regulatory hurdles as well as marketplace demands are clearly increasing the cost of innovation. Publication date: June 18, 2003, 17 pages with charts. Report 1: The State of the Industry
The first report in a series of four reports commissioned by AdvaMed (formerly the Health Industry Manufacturers Association) describes the evolution of the health care market and regulatory environment since 1995. It identifies the key market forces affecting the performance of the medical device and diagnostics industry, and provides an initial assessment of how these forces may be affecting innovation. The Lewin Group gathered information using three main types of sources: a mail survey of the medical device and diagnostics industry; interviews with industry executives, security analysts, venture capitalists, and other expert observers; and secondary information from a variety of published and unpublished sources. Report 2: The Medicare Payment Process and Patient Access to Technology The second in the series, this report provides an overview of Medicare coverage, coding, and payment systems in their current state, and 2) assesses the impact of Medicare systems, policies, and procedures on innovation of the medical device and diagnostics industry and on patient access. The report includes cases studies describing the payment experience of selected medical devices and models of the effects of payment challenges on companies' financial viability. Report 3: Technology Assessment by Public and Private Payers
The third in the series, this report examines the state of HTA (health technology assessment) today, current trends in the field, and the implication of HTA for innovation, the industry, and patient access. Whiles this report considers multiple applications of HTA, it focuses primarily on the use of HTA to inform payment policies. The application of HTA in payment will play an important and continued role in mediating access to health care technology. As described in this report, certain key aspects of HTA-included its transparency, timing, and evidence standards-can inappropriately delay or limit the introduction of beneficial technologies. At the same time, there are certain encouraging trends in the field and broader recognition of the need to improve the state of the art of HTA. Publication date: 2000, 55 pages with end notes. Report 4: The Impact of Regulation and Market Dynamics on Innovation
The fourth in the series, this report by The Lewin Group reviews the current environment of the U.S. medical device and diagnostics industry. The report 1) assesses FDA's readiness for new technologies through a review of recent initiatives that will potentially increase readiness; 2) identifies priority areas to be pursued as a means of improving FDA readiness; 3) creates an index of the factors that affect the process and climate of technological innovation, and 4) with this index, analyzes the current climate for innovation and provides a basis for future analysis and comparison.
